I’ve put a lot of thought into High Yield Learning Strategies lately, and have begun avidly exploring the ways Non-Linguistic Representations and Collaborative work can support students’ conceptual understanding of writing.  I have explored a few ways to allow students to represent their thinking visually, from Venn Diagrams, brainstorms, and story charts.  All of these give students the chance to recognize patterns and retain organizational frameworks more effectively.  Tell students to use the Hamburger method for paragraphs and they instantly get that “Aha!” face!
